Lot Description
Signed Edo-Period Japanese "Coming of Age Day" Boy's Katana with NBTHK Origami, Shirasaya, and Koshirae
17.25" nagasa. Shinogi-zukuri blade with a single hole nakago that is signed with long mei on both sides. Blade features a chu-kissaki, omaru boshi, ihori mune, midare suguha hamon, and itame hada. Blade is mounted in a blonde wood shirasaya, and is with koshirae. Koshirae includes a black lacquer saya, pierced kaki-gata tsuba, and tsunagi that is signed with kanji. Tsuka is wrapped with black ito, white same, shakudo fuchi of flowers, shakudo kashira with a chiseled tiger, and matching shakudo menuki. Included with item is original paperwork and NBTHK origami.
This item was made in 1844 according to the paperwork included. It is a wakizashi sized katana made for boys participating in Seijin no Hi, also known as the "Genpuku" or "Coming of Age Day" ceremony. This is a ceremony held every year on the second Monday of January, where Japanese boys enter adulthood by assuming adult names, hairstyles, and clothing around the age of 18 or 20.
