Lot Description
Lot of Four Japanese Tsubas with Folkloric Animal Motifs
1.) Iron tsuba with gold, silver, and shakudo inlays depicting a scene of a frolicking puppy gazing at the moon. About 2.75" x 3" diameter.
2.) Iron tsuba with gold and silver inlays depicting a Japanese folkloric scene of a raccoon dog, formerly hiding as a tea kettle, shapeshifting and revealing itself to the priest Shikoku. About 2.75" x 3" diameter.
3.) Copper tsuba engraved with nature scene of the Taoist god of longevity, Jurojin, with a companion deer (also a symbol of longevity). Jurojin is seen holding a peach in his hand (peaches are believed to prolong life). Tsuba is also signed with mei.
4.) Iron tsuba with gold and silver inlays depicting a gathering of traditional Japanese gifts including what appears to be a Daruma wish doll, gift envelopes, a fan that brings good luck, gold foil leaves, and a rat (believed to promise good fortune).
All items are housed in individual wood and cardboard boxes.
