Lot Description
Edo-Period Japanese Tsuba with Zhuge Liang Motif
Iron tsuba with gold, copper, and shakudo inlays depicting famous general and wiseman, Zhuge Liang, on a boat. About 2.75" diameter, housed in a 4.5" x 4.5" x 1.25" wood box.
According to paperwork, Zhuge Liang needed to replenish his supply of arrows so he ordered his men to fill boats with straw dummies. The boats were sent out across the Yangtze River through the thick mist of early dawn. The enemy thought Liang had sent a large convoy of soldiers for a surprise attack and showered the decoys with arrows, giving Liang a supply of 100,000 borrowed arrows.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
