Lot Description
An Indian Bhuj
8" blade. 27" overall with haft. Single edge clipped point wide blade that appears to have faint engravings to both sides. Haft also has engraved floral geometric pattern overall. Pommel is crown shaped and removable revealing a 4" single edge blade. Item features elephant head knob at base of blade. Possibly gilded at some point, but now bare of finish.
Known as an axe-knife, the bhuj (sometimes referred to as "elephant knife") originated in the Indian city of Bhuj. They are typically seen with elephant heads and hollow engraved hafts with a concealed blade. They are said to have been the favorite weapon of the Sindhi cavalry during the Soomra and Samma dynasties of Sindh.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
