Lot Description
A Large Chinese Celadon and Beige Jade Buffalo, 18th/19th Century
清中期 青玉臥牛
清中期 青玉臥牛
18th/19th Century
Carved with ridged, curved horns, the recumbent buffalo with legs tucked under the body and tail to one side, the head turned to the left, the celadon and russet brown stone polished softly, hardwood stand carved with a peach spray, lingzhi, and rockwork, the underside of the stand with incised bing character. Accompanied by Joan M. Hartman, Three Centuries of Jade, Indianapolis, 1971, in which this piece is illustrated.
Note:
It has been suggested that characters carved to the underside of wood stands for jades may refer to a grading system in the collections of the Qing court to indicate the quality of jade carvings.
Length 13 in., 33 cm.
Property from a Prominent New York Collection, thence by descent.
This lot is located in New York.
