Lot Description

Possibly Unkoku School, Edo Period (1615-1868)
江戶時代 雲谷派“五犬圖”六扇屏風
Edo Period (1615-1868)

Ka'me Dogs
a six-fold floor screen, ink and color on goldleaf paper.

Note:
European dogs of this type appeared in Japanese art as early as the Momoyama period (1568-1615). These exotic dogs, known as ka’me in Japan, were initially depicted in Namban art, which emerged in Japan when the Portuguese began arriving from the Philippines and Macao. The term ka’me is generally believed to be a corruption of the English word "come," suggesting it was applied to this breed after the early seventeenth century when the Japanese first encountered Englishmen and observed how they called their dogs.
Each panel height 67 1/2 x width 25 1/2 x depth 3/4 in., 171.5 x 64.8 x 2 cm.

Property from a Private Collector, Wisconsin.
