Altered Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle
Spanish American War
45-70. 26.5" barrel. SN: 482335 (mfg. ca1890). Modern blued finish, shortened walnut stock. Single shot breechloading metallic cartridge military rifle altered for civilian use by shortening the barrel and stock, with 1884 pattern Buffington adjustable ladder rear sight, replaced front sight blade and sling and stacking swivels. Lock marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD with a {Spread Winged Eagle} and breechblock marked U.S./MODEL/1884. Counterpane with weak SWP (Samuel W Porter) cartouche that appears to be dated 1890 and a weak {Circle-P} firing proof is present behind the triggerguard. Breech with V/P/{Eagle Head} inspection marks as well as an additional small P mark. Rifle features a low arch breech with bronze firing pin, three-click tumbler, grooved trigger with checkered tip, two-piece triggerguard and solid buttplate without trap door. Stock shortened to "two band rifle" configuration. No cleaning rod is present. A well worn US 1905 pattern leather sling is attached to the rifle.
