Lot Description
Lot of 2 photographs by Philadelphia artist Frederick Gutekunst, 12.5 x 15 in. (sight), each signed by the photographer at lower right in the print, under original mat with subject identified in gilt, and housed in ornately decorated frame, 25.75 x 29 in. overall. Gutekunst (1831-1917) was a popular photographer of the Philadelphia elite, especially among writers, actors, and other artists. Edwin Booth, arguably the most popular American stage actor of the latter half of the the 19th century but better remembered as the brother of President Lincoln's assassin, and Barrett, considered one of George Custer's favorite actors who was similarly popular and had fought in Lincoln's army as part of the 28th Massachusetts, were frequent co-stars and collaborators. They toured the United States and Europe together several times, giving acclaimed performances of Hamlet, Othello, Julius Caesar, and Barrett even published a biography, Edwin Booth and his Contemporaries, in 1886.
