Lot Description

Abraham Lincoln, 1860 Campaign Literature

Lot of 2. Bartlett, D.W. [Authorized Edition] Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln. New York: H. Dayton, 1860. 12mo, bound in pale blue paper wrappers, both front and back wrappers are present with the back wrapper advertising the sale of this book, 150pp. (Monaghan #24)

This is the "Authorized Edition" of the first edition, published in June of 1860, a month after Lincoln's nomination in May of 1860. According to Wessen in his work on the Campaign Lives of Abraham Lincoln, he cites, "The usual chapter on Hamlin was not included in this short form issue; hence the book can not be deprived of the distinction of being the book devoted exclusively to Abraham Lincoln."

Abraham Lincoln 1860 Cooper Union Speech. The Republican Party Vindicated The demands of the South explained. Speech of Hon. Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, at the Cooper Institute, New York City, February 27, 1860. 8vo, booklet, 8pp, double columns. (Monaghan #55)

Lincoln carefully prepared this speech along with his tour into New England which exposed him to the East and helped raise him to national prominence to receive the Republican nomination three months later, defeating William H. Seward for the nomination.
