General of all the Armies of / the Republic. It was suggested that this negative (with / that of Gen'l U.S. Grant) be made in com- / memoration of that event. / Abraham Lincoln." This portrait, originally taken by Alexander Gardner in 1863, is sometimes referred to as the "Gettysburg" portrait or the "roving eye" portrait, after Lincoln's seemingly roving left eye.
