Abraham Lincoln, Pair of Cabinet Cards, Featuring Portrait by Moses P. Rice

Lot of 2. Cabinet card portrait of Abraham Lincoln, with "Copyright / 91, by M.P. Rice" written in the negative lower right. Mount with copyright information and caption reading, "From the only original unretouched negative, made in 1864, at the time he / commissioned General U.S. Grant Lieut. General of all the Armies of / the Republic. It was suggested that this negative (with / that of Gen'l U.S. Grant) be made in com- / memoration of that event. / Abraham Lincoln." This portrait, originally taken by Alexander Gardner in 1863, is sometimes referred to as the "Gettysburg" portrait or the "roving eye" portrait, after Lincoln's seemingly roving left eye. Pose cataloged in Ostendorf as O-77.
