Lot Description
American (Philadelphia), ca 1847-51. A coin silver match safe by Leonard and Wilson, one side featuring a portrait of Zachary Taylor with his campaign slogan "A Little More Grape," the other side with patriotic and military symbols, the whole with floral decoration on a stippled ground. With partially obscured mark to interior rim, and monogrammed to one side; lg. 2.5, wd. 1 in.
Twelfth President of the United States, Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), made a name for himself through his military service, including his important victory at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican American War. It was during this battle that Taylor exclaimed to Captain Braxton Bragg, "Double-shot your guns and give 'em hell, Bragg," an order that was later misquoted: "Give them a little more grape, Captain Bragg." The expression "A little more grape" thus became the slogan for Taylor's ultimately successful Presidential campaign as it highlighted the major general's prowess on the battlefield.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
