Lot Description

George Washington, Exceedingly Rare Etching, Ca 1785-1800

Etching, 10.875 x 14 in., matted to 12 x 16 in, ca 1785-1800. Equestrian portrait of George Washington in a stylized landscape scene, encircled by foliate border and text reading, "The Protector of his Country. The Supporter of Liberty. And the Benefactor of Mankind. May his name never be forgotten. His Excellency George Washington Esq. Commander in chief of the American Armies." Washington brandishes a sword in his right hand and wears a tricorn hat with cockade and blue jacket. Four tents are visible in the background at left. Inscription added later in pen at lower left reads, "Handed down in Scofield Family since Revolutionary Days."
