Lot Description
Sixth Plate Tintype of a Young African American Woman, Plus
Lot of 2, featuring a sixth plate tintype, framed with a slave bill of sale to 16.25 x 20.25 in. Portrait shows a young African American woman wearing a white dress and gold rings, seated before an artistic studio backdrop. Mounted below, Partially printed DS, 1p, approx. 6.25 x 2.75 in. (sight), "Richmond." March 28, 1863. Document records the sale of "one Negro Slave named Anna" for $1,960. Signed by John Newman, attesting to Anna's health and acknowledging receipt of funds from A.J. Reine (?).
Though these items are displayed together, we cannot confirm that the slave referenced in the bill of sale is the woman shown in the tintype.
