Lot Description

13-Star US Flag with Unusual Star Pattern

Hand-sewn flag, appears to be silk, (but not removed from frame), 7.5 x 13 in., with 13 painted stars, comprised of a central star surrounded by 10 stars, with one in each of the lower corners. The fly consists of 12 hand-sewn stripes, with a red ("blood stripe") touching lower edge of canton. Blue cloth hoist. No holes or other obvious means to hang it, but the flag could have had a small pole through the hoist sleeve in the manner of a parade flag. Framed, 11 x 19 in.

The back of the frame is inscribed: "This flag belonged to the Sorrells family. It is attributed to the Civil War: 'hand sewn.' Maker of flag unknown; Circa: 1862. Framed for preservation of flag." This is followed by the birth years of four of the Sorrell men (1837, 1875, 119004, and 1938).

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
