John R. Chapin, Gouache Depicting Custer's Charge at Gettysburg
Gouache on paper, approx. 9.5 x 6 in. (sight), framed to 19 x 15.5 in. Signed lower left, "J.R. Chapin," and inscribed below, "Chap XXIII / Custer's charge at Gettysburg. 'Come on ye wolverines!'"
John R. Chapin (1823-1904) was an accomplished nineteenth-century artist and illustrator from New York whose work appeared in publications such as Harper's Weekly. He was also a noted Civil War field artist who produced the famous sketch The Surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, April 12, 1865, which is housed at the Library of Congress.
