Washington, (D.C.), March 28, 1854. Partially-printed diplomatic commission, signed by President Franklin Pierce, appointing Augustus W. Scharit of Missouri, as Consul of the United States of America for the Port of Falmouth, England; counter-signed by Secretary of State William L. Marcy. White paper seal intact in bottom left. Creasing from old folds, separated along center horizontal fold at left, two small holes at folds along same; scattered foxing and soiling; lightly toned; faint dampstaining in top and bottom center edge, affecting a few letters in “Marcy”; crease traversing “William” at bottom. Approximately 12 7/8 x 17 1/4 in. (327 x 438 mm) (sight). In mat, and unexamined out of frame 18 1/4 x 22 1/2 in. (463 x 571 mm).
