Washington, (D.C.), February 15, 1901. Partially-printed military commission on vellum, signed by President William McKinley, appointing Justus M. Brown Assistant Surgeon General with the rank of Colonel in the service of the United States; counter-signed by Secretary of War Elihu Root. Blue paper seal intact at bottom left. Approximately 18 x 15 in. (457 x 381 mm) (sight). In mat with portrait of McKinley, and unexamined out of frame, 26 5/8 x 20 5/8 (676 x 524 mm). 

A handsome military commission signed by McKinley less than eight months before his assassination, appointing Justus M. Brown as Assistant Surgeon General. Brown served meritoriously as a medical supply officer in New York City.
