Lot Description

[Posters] Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri de: Eldorado Aristide Bruant

Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri de
Eldorado Aristide Bruant dans soncabaret
(Paris): Imp. Bourgerie & Cie, (1892). Color lithographic poster, with République française ink stamp at top right. Laid down on linen and stretched over wooden frame. Heavy wear along edges, with chipping and closed tears, some with in-painted restorations; in-painted restoration at bottom below letters; loss and hole in linen below publisher's imprint at bottom right; small hole and chipping in top left; in-painted restoration along center horizontal crease; small hole in upper center vertical crease; other scattered surface wear. Approximately 56 1/2 x 37 in. (1435 x 940 mm). Unexamined out of frame, 62 1/4 x 42 1/2 in. (1581 x 1079 mm). Wittrock P5; Adriani 4. Sold with all faults.

The second (of four) posters Lautrec created depicting his friend, the Parisian cabaret singer Aristide Bruant. Despite the shocked reactions to his first poster of the performer that he created earlier that same year (Ambassadeurs, 1892), Lautrec created this poster using new stones, but retaining the same dimensions and color palette. This copy advertises Bruant's café-cabaret at the Eldorado on Boulevard de Strasbourg in Paris. Lautrec would create two more posters showing Bruant, also in 1892.
