Massachusetts, April 29, 1793. Partially-printed military commission, signed by John Hancock as governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, for George Hawes, appointing him “Captain of a Company in the fifth Regiment” of the Massachusetts militia; counter-signed by Secretary John Avery; inscribed on verso by General Oliver Pond, affirming Hawes took his oath, dated Norfolk, September 4, 1793. Large paper seal intact in top left. Creasing from contemporary folds; separated along central vertical fold; top left quadrant separated along folds; small loses along folds, affecting some printed and manuscript text; scattered losses and wear along edges; unevenly toned, recto and verso. 12 1/4 x 14 3/4 in. (311 x 375 mm). In frame.
