Lot Description
[Fore-edge Painting] Milton, John: The Poetical Works of John Milton...
Milton, John
The Poetical Works of John Milton…
London: Charles Daly, (ca. 1850). 12mo. liv, 450 pp. With a fine fore-edge painting of John Milton's house. Full dark red morocco, elaborately stamped in blind and in gilt, joints and corners rubbed; all edges gilt; front hinge starting; scattered spotting to text.
With a fine fore-edge painting of John Milton's cottage at Shalfont St. Giles in Buckinghamshire. Milton and his wife moved to the cottage in 1665 to escape the Great Plague in London. While they only lived there for less than a year, it is Milton's only known extant residence, and importantly, is where he finished Paradise Lost.
