Lot Description

Auguste Edouart (1789-1861), A Group of Five Silhouette Profile Portraits, dates ranging 1828-1842

All cut-out silhouettes against drawn and ink-washed backgrounds; comprising a lady and gentleman in an interior setting, signed and dated, “Aug Edouart fecit 1828," l.l., bird's eye maple frame; a gentleman holding top hat in an interior setting, signed and dated, “Aug Edouart fecit 1842/ Philadelphia,” gilt and burl walnut frame; a gentleman standing on a veranda and holding top hat and cane, signed and dated, “Aug Edouart fecit 1832,” l.r., bird's eye maple frame, and bearing original “Monsieur Edouart” label verso; two ladies conversing by a fireplace with cat, signed and dated, “Aug Edouart fecit 1830,” l.l. bird's eye maple frame, and bearing original “Monsieur Edouart” label verso; and a group of three people (possibly not by Edouart) identified on old label verso, “1. Mme Rachel- actress/ 2. Mr. Samuel Warren- play write/ 3. Mr. Charles Kemble- tragedian/ London, Aug. 10th 1838,” and signed and dated, possibly dubiously, “Aug Edouart, fecit 1838," l.l., gilt frame, bearing old label for The Elizabeth L. Maurier Collection of Profiles (probably dubious).
