Publisher's red cloth, stamped in gilt with a design by Alfred Garth Jones, and with silhouette of a hound stamped in black on front board, cocked, spine faded, boards unevenly faded, corners and spine ends worn; all edges trimmed; scattered creasing to top corners; front hinge worn; small spotting at bottom of pp. 155-160; small tape repair on verso of plate facing p. 322. First edition of Doyle's most famous Sherlock Holmes novel. First serialized in The Strand Magazine from August, 1901-April, 1902, it was the first reappearance of the Holmes character after his apparent death in The Final Problem, in 1893.
