Note: Lane Bryant was founded in 1904 by Lena Himmelstein, a Lithuanian Jewish refugee. Himmelstein married a Russian Jewish refugee, David Bryant, in 1899; he died shortly after the birth of their son Raphael. In 1909, Himmelstein married Albert Malsin, who was also a Lithuanian Jewish refugee. While Bryant focused on designing clothing for her company, Malsin ran the firm's business operations. This cigarette case was given to Malsin in 1921 in appreciation by the company's board, after over a decade of explosive sales growth. Malsin died unexpectedly in 1923, though Lena and the couple's sons continued operating Lane Bryant until its acquisition by The Limited in 1982.
