First English edition in a contemporary binding of Marquis de Chastellux's account of his travels in America during the American Revolution, “the first trustworthy record of life in the United States.” (Howes). Chastellux served under French General Comte de Rochambeau during the Revolution, and was the principal liaison between him and  George Washington. A participant in the Siege of Yorktown, Chastellux compiled the material for this set while he traveled from New England south to Virginia. “A classic American travel narrative.” (Reese)
