First English edition. 8vo. xv, (i), 462; xii, 432 pp. Illustrated with two engraved folding maps, one engraved folding plan, and two engraved folding views. Full contemporary tree calf, red and black morocco spine labels, stamped in gilt, extremities and corners lightly worn; all edges trimmed; marbled endpapers; front board of second volume detached; book-plate of William E. Simon and Carol Simon on front paste-down of each volume; old ownership signature on verso of front free endpaper; faint dampstaining at front of first volume. First English edition in a contemporary binding of Marquis de Chastellux's account of his travels in America during the American Revolution, “the first trustworthy record of life in the United States.” (Howes). Chastellux served under French General Comte de Rochambeau during the Revolution, and was the principal liaison between him and  George Washington. A participant in the Siege of Yorktown, Chastellux compiled the material for this set while he traveled from New England south to Virginia. “A classic American travel narrative.” (Reese)
