Circa 1976. Pen and ink with watercolor on wove paper, signed by Gorey in pencil below image. 5 1/2 x 3 9/16 in. (140 x 90 mm) illustration on 7 11/16 x 7 1/4 in. (195 x 184) sheet. In mat and in frame, 17 x 14 3/8 in. (432 x 365 mm). 

A wonderful and fine original illustration by Edward Gorey, used for his humorous bicycling postcards that make up his work, The Broken Spoke. This illustration, Les Insectes Cyclistes, first appeared in the June 14, 1976 Sport's Illustrated article of the same name. It subsequently appears as the 27th illustration in the book-form edition that appeared later that same year. See lot 71 for a study of this work.
