First edition in rare original wrappers of John Quincy Adams's speech commemorating the life and character of Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette died on May 20, 1834, and this speech was read by Adams before both houses of Congress and a packed crowd of spectators, on December 31. Rev. Edward Dunlap Smith (1807-83) served as pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.--where Adams often attended his sermons--and on December 1, 1834 was appointed chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives. He served until 1835, before moving to New York City where he preached at Old Chelsea Presbyterian Church for 30 years.
