Lot Description

A rare Chinese hardwood horseshoe-back chair, Late Ming to early Qing dynasty 珍罕硬木圈椅 明末或清初

The curved continuous crest rail extending beyond the front serpentine supports and terminating in out-curved scrolled handrests above shaped spandrels, the splat carved and pierced with a ruyi-head form medallion containing a scrolling qilong, flanked by shaped flanges, over a pierced rectangular reserve with a lively dragon holding a ruyi-spray, all above scrolled motifs in low relief, the soft mat seat set into the rectangular frame above shaped aprons and spandrels carved with qilong scrolls, the legs of rounded section joined by low box stretchers and footrest.
