Lot Description

Samuel Yellin, "Sketch in Iron", Study for the Frick Residence

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1913-14
Wrought iron
Unmarked
H: 78 1/2, W: 24 5/8, D: 2 3/8 in.

Note
The present lot is a "sketch in iron" made by Samuel Yellin as part of his commission work for the Henry Clay Frick House in New York. Designed by Carrère & Hastings and located between 70th and 71st Streets facing Fifth Avenue, the Frick House was constructed between 1912 and 1914. While the entrance doors Yellin designed for the residence are well known, this sketch was created for proposed additional ironwork that was ultimately unrealized. Of particular interest is the three pickets in different designs, illustrating a range of options for the client.

The present lot is represented in the Samuel Yellin archive as part of Job No. 1308, "Panel for fence at entrance."
