(Venice, 1691). Engraved hand-colored map, 19 1/2 x 26 3/8 in. (495 x 670 mm). Second state (of two), with zodiacs illustrated at left and right. Scattered light soiling in margins; small repaired closed tear, bottom left corner. In mat and in frame, 28 1/4 x 34 1/4 in. (717 x 870 mm). Shirley 548 A handsome example of Italian cartographer Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's map of the Western Hemisphere, showing California as an island, and with an early depiction of New Zealand's coastline. From his atlas, Atlante Veneto (1691), "this map is one of the most decorative published by Coronelli and is derived from his large 1688 printed gores, themselves drawn from the glorious 490-centimetre manuscript globe constructed for Louis XIV in 1683."
