[Literature] Woolf, Virginia
Kew Gardens
Woolf, Virginia
Kew Gardens
(London): The Hogarth Press, (1927). Third and limited English edition, #172/500 numbered copies, signed by Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell in purple ink. 4to. From the library of publisher, editor, and literary agent Donald Friede (1901-64), and with his Miguel Covarrubias-designed book-plate on front paste-down. Title-page printed in brown; text printed within woodcut borders designed by Woolf's sister Vanessa Bell. Original white paper-covered boards, printed in brown, azure, and lime-green, spine largely perished, corners bumped and worn, extremities and boards rubbed, scattered soiling to same, boards slightly bowed; all edges trimmed; foxing to title-page; text lightly toned with scattered foxing. Kirkpatrick A3c; Woolmer 155 An unsophisticated and scarce signed copy of this fragile and limited publication. First published in 1919 in octavo--with a second edition the same year--this quarto edition greatly expanded the illustrations by Bell to encompass every page. Provenance
The Estate of G. Franklin Ludington, New York City.
