Lot Description

[Curiosa] [Peepshow] Le chateau d'Edinbourg. Das Schloss zu Edinburg. The castle of Edinburgh

Le chateau d'Edinbourg. Das Schloss zu Edinburg. The castle of Edinburgh
(Germany, ca. 1830s). Accordion-style peepshow depicting Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket; comprising five engraved cut-out scenes with hand-coloring, and one hand-colored engraved back-scene; connected by paper bellows, left and right; in original illustrated paper-covered pasteboard viewing case with three peepholes; original paper sleeve presumably wanting. Approximately 18 in. (457 mm) in length when opened; in later wooden box. Scattered wear and soiling to box, but overall very well-preserved. Hyde, Paper Peepshows, 106; OCLC 315308438

A charming and scarce accordion-style peepshow of Edinburgh, Scotland's Old Town, depicting Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket in the large central view with parading troops, figures, and carriages in foreground, and flanked by two smaller views, at left the interior of Trinity College Kirk, and at right, a scene of a ball in progress with dancers. We have located only three examples, at Yale University Library, the National Library of Scotland, and a variant double-sided example at the Victoria & Albert Museum (see Hyde 104-106).

Provenance
The Estate of G. Franklin Ludington, New York City.
