Lot Description

An assorted collection of nine carved and paint-decorated boxes and busk; American and Northern European, 18th / 19th century

Comprising a carved walnut candle box with sliding lid, shell and tree of life motif; a Frisian carved oak candle box, with heart cut-out and lid with carved rosette and concentric circles, the interior of the lid with punched initials, "GK"; a Northern European bride’s box, decorated with floral motifs; four firkins, variously colored, one branded to lid, "Ephraim Murdock Jr.," another inscribed to lid, "F. Horton."; a green-painted and chip-carved candle box, the sides decorated with crowns and circles containing fylfot hex, heart, sun, crescent moon, and various Masonic motifs, one side inscribed, "George Miklei;" the lid interior ink inscribed and dated, "Anno 1759/ Schief Agnus Dei"; and a chip-carved busk with heart, fans, and circles with geometric motifs.
