Second edition of George G. Smith's engraving of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration is printed in small calligraphic font, and is surrounded by an elaborate border composed of the original 13 state seals as well as portraits of the first 11 presidents through to the newly elected James K. Polk. The first edition, printed ca. 1841-45, featured the presidents up to John Tyler and did not include the view of the Capitol building. A third edition was printed ca. 1849 that removed the Capitol image and replaced it with a portrait of 12th president Zachary Taylor.
