Chicago and New York: Geo. M. Hill Co., 1900. First edition, mixed, but largely, second state (including second state points: ads on p. [2] not enclosed in a single-rule box; corrected text; imperfect type in last lines of pp. 100 and 186; second state of plate facing p. 92; colophon printed in 13 lines without a double-ruled box, but with first state of plate facing p. 34 and without the press-printed copyright notice on verso of title-page as called for in Hanff & Greene). 8vo. 259, (3) pp. Illustrated with tipped-in color title-page, 23 tipped-in color plates, and numerous in-text illustrations in various color shadings, by W.W. Denslow. Original third state green pictorial cloth (Hanff & Greene's variant C), with publisher's imprint at foot of spine stamped in red in serifed type, boards stamped in green and in red, boards lightly soiled, spine slightly darkened, tail of spine lightly frayed; all edges trimmed; pictorial grey-tone front paste-down and pictorial red and black pictorial rear past-down; front and rear hinges starting, but sound. Hanff & Greene I.2, binding variant C

A near-fine copy of this iconic children's book, the first in Baum's Oz series, and the source of the classic film from 1939 starring Judy Garland.
