[Americana] [New Jersey] Darrah, William Early 19th-Century New Jersey Sheriff's Manuscript Journal

Sussex County, New Jersey, October 29, 1819-August 21, 1821. Oblong 8vo. Autograph journal of Sussex County Sheriff William Darrah, comprising 75 manuscript entries, each largely two pages in length, primarily relating to civil cases, listing the plaintiff(s), defendant(s), judge, damages awarded, court and administrative fees, etc; most entries signed at bottom by Darrah. Original full reverse tan calf, stamped in blind, boards and spine worn and rubbed; all edges trimmed; scattered, generally light, wear; scattered ink smudging.

A fascinating manuscript journal from Sussex County Sheriff William Darrah (1777-1830), recording his notes from 75 court cases, and listing dozens of plaintiffs and defendants, the presiding judges and attorneys, as well as enumerating the numerous court costs, and resulting damages awarded. Darrah served as Sussex County's 23rd Sheriff from 1818-21.
