Lot Description

[Prints] Audubon, J(ohn). J(ames). Spotted or Canada Grouse

London: R(obert). Havell, 1833 (but, 1836). Hand-colored engraving with aquatint and etching, on J. Whatman watermarked paper, dated 1836. Engraved, printed, and colored by Robert Havell, after Audubon. Unevenly trimmed, within plate-mark, with "I" in "Plate CLXXVI" excised; mat burn; unevenly toned; scattered spotting in margins. 25 1/4 x 37 1/8 in. (641 x 943 mm). In mat and in frame, 35 3/4 x 47 1/8 in. (908 x 1197 mm). Low, p. 113, Variant 2

Plate CLXXVI from Audubon's The Birds of America (London, 1827-38). "Painting and plate depict two males, right and second from left, and two females, left and second from right, all amid vegetation that includes Twisted stalk and Trillium.
