Lot Description

[Prints] Audubon, John J(ames). Loggerhead Shrike

(London): R(obert). Havell, (1836). Hand-colored engraving with aquatint and etching, on J. Whatman watermarked paper, dated 1836. Engraved, printed, and colored by Robert Havell after Audubon. Edges trimmed close to plate-mark; mat burn; scattered foxing; bottom right corner and edge repaired on verso; top right corner chipped. 28 1/8 x 23 1/2 in. (714 x 597 mm). In mat and in frame, 36 5/8 x 31 1/4 in. (930 x 794 mm). Low, p. 62, Variant 2

Plate LVII from Audubon's The Birds of America (London, 1827-38). "Painting and plate depict two birds at the top of a dead tree, around which twines a Hagbrier. The upper bird holds a dead or dying mouse in his talons. Possibly painted in 1825 in Louisiana." (Susanne M. Low, A Guide to Audubon's Birds of America, p. 62).
