Hartford, Conn(ecticut).: Taylor & Huntington, ca. 1880s-90s. Albumen photograph mounted to card. From the series, The War for the Union. Photographic History 1861-1865; printed red ornamental border, with printed text below image, "President Lincoln, Major Allen Pinkerton and Gen. McClernard, Antietam, October, 1862." Scattered surface wear and spotting; verso with printed text listing other photographs from the series for sale. Albumen: 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. (165 x 216 mm), card: 8 1/2 x 10 5/8 in. (216 x 270 mm). In mat and in frame, 15 x 17 1/8 in. (381 x 435 mm).
A scarce albumen print of President Abraham Lincoln with his spymaster Major Allen Pinkerton and General John Alexander McClernard at Antietam, taken on October 2, 1862, a few weeks following the bloody battle there, on September 17. Reprinted from the glass negative taken by Alexander Gardner, while employed for Matthew Brady, for The War for the Union Photographic History series.
