London: Printed for T. Egerton, 1814. First edition in English. 8vo. xix, (i), 234 pp. Translated from the French by Lt.-Col. Marc Rene Anne Marie, Baron de Montalembert (1777-1831). With a fine fore-edge painting of a Napoleonic battle-scene, with a previous cataloguer noting it to be the Battle of Aboukir, and flanked by two portraits, noted by same cataloguer as being Napoleon and French General Jean-Charles Pichegru. Contemporary full crimson straight-grain morocco, stamped in blind and in gilt; all edges gilt; contemporary ownership signature at head of title-page; illustrated book-plate of John T. Custis, Esq. on front paste-down.

First English translation of French statesmen, general, and military engineer Lazare Carnot's Dans la Defense des Places fortes... (1810), with a fine fore-edge painting depicting a Napoleonic War battle-scene and portrait of Napoleon.
