Signed by Whitman on mounted photographic portrait, "Walt Whitman / born May 31 / 1819". Publisher's three-quarter tan morocco over green marbled paper-covered boards, brown morocco spine label, stamped in blind and in gilt, rebacked with original spine laid down, spine darkened, boards and extremities rubbed and soiled; all edges trimmed; yellow endpapers; green morocco book-plate of Estelle Doheny on front paste-down.
