Lot Description
London: Printed for J. Johnson, et al., 1799. In two volumes. The Eighth Edition; Corrected and Revised. 4to. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Johnson in first volume. Full contemporary brown calf, rebacked, corners renewed, red and black morocco spine labels, stamped in gilt; all edges trimmed; with the armorial book-plate of the Rev. Richard Cresswell on front paste-down of each volume, and with his ownership signature at top of front free endpaper in each volume. Courtney & Smith, p. 58
Reverend Richard Cresswell (1815-82) was born in London but spent most of his life in Devon. He took holy orders at St. John's College, Oxford, and took his curacy, first at Hawkshurst Kent, and then at Salcombe Regis, in Devon. In 1844 he gave up his position, and with his wife, embarked on a career as a botanist, amassing a considerable collection now held at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery in Exeter.
