London: Printed for Taylor and Hessey, 1822. First edition in book form. 12mo. vi, 206, (2) (ads) pp.; including half-title. Original blue paper-covered boards, likely sometime expertly rebacked, extremities rubbed; all edges untrimmed; in orange cloth fall-down-back box.
A lovely first edition of Thomas De Quincey's autobiography chronicling the effects of his laudanum addiction, the most famous account of drug addiction in English literature. First published by De Quincey in the London Magazine in September and October, 1821.
