This archive is related to the branch of the Biddle family descended from John (1707-1789) and Sarah (1711-1773) Biddle. The couple migrated to Philadelphia in the 1720s from West New Jersey, where William Biddle (1630-1712) first established the family in America in the 1680s (see Lot 34). The first generation of the Philadelphia Biddles were instrumental in shaping the mercantile, cultural, and political landscape of both Pennsylvania and the early United States.
