Lot Description

[Literature] Bryant, William Cullen Autograph Poem. signed and Autograph Letter, signed and initialed

New York, Monday Nov(ember). 21, 1853. Two sheets, each measuring 10 x 7 7/8 in. (254 x 200 mm). Autograph manuscript of the nine stanza poem "The Voice of Autumn", completely in the hand of William Cullen Bryant, and signed by him, sent to magazine publisher George R. Graham for inclusion in his literary periodical Graham's Magazine; with accompanying transmittal letter from Bryant to Graham, "I send you on the other leaf a poem for Graham's Magazine. I hope it will reach you...for your purpose," with an autograph postscript, initialed by Bryant. Each sheet with creased from contemporary folds; scattered edge wear; remnants from old mount of versos.

American Romantic poet William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) sends magazine publisher George R. Graham an autograph manuscript of his nine-stanza poem "The Voice of Autumn", for publication in his literary periodical, Graham's Magazine. Written in Roslyn, New York in 1853, "The Voice of Autumn" would be published in the January 1854 issue of Graham's (Vol. 44, p. 10).
