Lot Description

[American Revolution] [Treaty of Alliance] The London Chronicle

London: Sold by J. Wilkie, February 9-11, 1779. No. 3462, Vol. XLV. 8 pp., 11 x 8 in. (279 x 203 mm). Printed newspaper in three columns. Disbound; edges trimmed; British halfpenny tax stamp on fourth page.

An early British printing of the February 6, 1778 Treaty of Alliance between the United States and France, reproduced in full as a postscript to this issue. The first page of the Chronicle features an excerpt from Sir William Pulteney's Considerations on the present State of Public Affairs, and the Means of raising the Necessary Supplies. He reflects on events of the past year and discusses the Continental Congress's recent rejection of the Conciliatory Bill and the ratification of the Treaty of Alliance between the United States and France. He argues that Great Britain should continue in their brave fighting, or accept the loss of their colonies.
