Washington, (D.C.), July 1, 1846. One sheet folded to make four pages, 10 x 8 1/4 in. (254 x 209 mm). Partially-printed presidential order, signed by Polk, directing "the Secretary of State," and future president, James Buchanan, "to affix the Seal of the United States to the remission of the penalty granted to Capt. Paul Paulson, Master of Ship Howard of Hamburg."; docketed in pencil on verso; creasing from contemporary folds, scattered edge-wear.
