Lot Description

A group of three rare needlework samplers late 18th / early 19th century

Comprising an Anglo-Indian sampler, possibly from Krishnagiri, probably early 19th century, with multicolored threads on a cotton or linen ground, depicting vine border surrounding various motifs such as a pyramidal bird cage filled with birds, small dogs, tree, flowers, heart, geometric patterns, and hookah, the top with English alphabet above Sanskrit alphabet, inscribed at lower left, "Krishnagyr Girlrs," framed; a needlework sampler, possibly Scandinavian, dated "1778" and "1779," with multicolored threads on cotton or linen ground, depicting two central flower urns each flanked by oversized monogram "SP" and dates "1778" and "1779" respectively, the upper urn also flanked by small monogram, "PE," the border depicting various motifs including flowers, flower baskets, trees, heart, and birds, the lower left corner inscribed, "Lamzoars" (?), framed; and an alphabet sampler with dark threads on cotton or linen ground, inscribed and dated, "1814" and "Jane Wilson Dec. 1815," with Greek key border, matted and framed.
