Lot Description

A pair of Japanese gilt-lacquered carved wood figures 日本鎏金木造像一对 Meiji/Taisho period ?????

One figure wearing an official Chinese-style headdress holding a long pennant in one hand, his robe decorated with gilt lacquered floral and phoenix motifs, with a low relief shishi to the front and a dragon to the back of his girdle, their eyes, claws and inlays to his hat and sleeve-hems embellished with mother of pearl, interior of his robes signed Shokaisai Takayoshi (?); the other figure wearing a gilt lacquered scholar's headdress centered by a mother of pearl embellishment, similar decoration of floriform medallions, flaming pearls, and winged dragons to robe, holding a bell-form object, and carrying a scroll-case on his back; both on wood stands.

H(taller figure without wood stand): 18 1/2 in.
