Lot Description

[Presidential] Lincoln, Abraham Signed Military Commission

Washington, (D.C.): July 28, 1862. Partially-printed military commission on vellum, signed by Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, appointing William H. Ludlow as "Additional Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Major"; counter-signed by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War; inscribed at top by J. Thomas of the Adjutant General's Office, recording the appointment in the official records, Volume 17, p. 90, faded; docketed on verso; original blue paper seal intact. 17 5/8 x 13 5/8 in. (448 x 346 mm). Elaborately framed with a photographic portrait of Lincoln, a bronze medallion, and a descriptive plaque; 32 1/2 x 34 in. (825 x 864 mm).

A fine military commission, signed by Abraham Lincoln, appointing William Handy Ludlow (1821-90) as an aide-de-camp to Major General John Adams Dix (1798-1879).
