Lot Description

[Fine Bindings] Burton, Richard F. (editor) The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night: A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights Entertainments

No place: Privately printed by the Burton club, no date. In 16 volumes (ten volumes of the Thousand Nights and a Night and six volumes of Supplemental Nights). Limited edition, #50/150 sets of The Manuscript Edition, including a 12-line tipped-in autograph letter, signed by Burton and dated August 25, 1866. Illustrated in color and in black and white. Frontispiece in first volume in two states (one in color, one in black and white), frontispieces in other 15 volumes in one state. Bound in full blue-green morocco, elaborately stamped in gilt; marbled endpapers and doublures; top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed (some pages unopened). Although unsigned, the binding is possibly a deluxe edition of the set as an identical binding has been seen by this cataloguer in two other instances. Not in Penzer.

A handsome set, rare with manuscript present.
